This is Chips story, and
Kittys too. It begins in late 1959 with the birth of a bouncing,
blue-eyed baby boy in California. Its a happy time for Kitty,
her husband, and their new son Chip. The dream ends five years later
when Kittys husband decides he wants a divorce. Although Kitty
is surprised and shaken, she pulls herself together for Chips
sake.
The
bond between mother and son grows stronger with the passing years. Chip
grows up in Indiana, where his mother and her new husband operate a
Chinese restaurant. He becomes a fixture of the restaurant and a favorite
of the customers and staff. Hes happy, well-adjusted, and surrounded
by love. Then suddenly, at age seventeen, Chip runs off to New Orleans
to start a new life. Kitty suspects hes homosexual, and he confirms
her suspicion.
Their relationship, based on mutual respect
and admiration remains unchanged by Chips revelation. However
several years later, Chip is afflicted by a mysterious illness
and is diagnosed with AIDS.
Caley eloquently chronicles the horror
of AIDS, seeing it from both the eyes of the victim and those who love
him. Theirs is an uplifting story which stands as testimony that love
does indeed conquer all.
